Akshay Kumar was born in a Punjabi family as Rajiv Hariom Bhatia. His father was a government employee. She grew up in Chandni Chowk, Delhi. They then moved to Koliwara in Mumbai.

He then went to Bangkok to study martial arts and he worked there as a chef. He then returned to Mumbai to start his martial arts school. One of his students was a photographer and recommended him for modeling. In front of the camera, Akshay was given Rs 5000 for two hours. So he opted to be a model. His first film was Didar which was directed by Pramod Chakraborty.
He then got engaged to actress Twinkle Khanna and the two got married on 14 January 2001. They have a son Aarav, born in September 2002 and a daughter, Nitara.

Akshay made his Bollywood debut in the 1991 film Saugandh. In 1992, he again starred in the film Khiladi. In 1994, he starred in his first action film, Mohra and then Main Khiladi Tu Anari, which were the highest-grossing films of that year. He then signed Yash Chopra’s film Yeh Dillagi which was again successful.
He received his first nomination for Best Actor Award at Filmfare and Star Screen Festivals. Later that same year, Akshay starred in two films, Elaan and Suhag, which were also successful. He was then declared one of the most successful actors of that year.
In the year 1995, he starred in the film Saba Bada Khiladi, which became a hit. He tasted success with the Khiladi series. Then in 1996, he again starred in a Khiladi series Khiladi Khiladi, which was the highest-grossing film of that year.

In the year 1997, Akshay was seen in a supporting role in the film Dil To Pagal Hai, which earned him a Filmfare nomination for Best Supporting Actor. Then played a comedy role in another Khiladi series, Mr. and Mrs. Khiladi, Movies totally failed at the box office.
Then in the year 1999 he acted in the films Sanghar and Janwar, which initially did not make any profit but later earned money.
In the year 2000, he starred in the movie Hera Pheri, which became a hit. He then acted in a romantic film Dhadak, which made average profits. After that he did some comedy films like Awara Pagal Deewana in the year 2002 and Mujhse Shaadi Karogi in the year 2004 and Garam Masala in the year 2005. The films were successful at the box office and then won their second Filmfare Award, being the Best Comedian. Akshay was then seen in theatrical roles as Ek Rishta in 2001, Aankhen in 2002, Bewafa in 2005 and Waqt: The Race Against Time in 2005.
Then in 2006, he starred in the sequel to Hera Pheri, titled Hera Pheri. The sequel became a major success at the box office. Then later that year he starred in the romantic musical Jaan-e-Man opposite Salman Khan. It did not go well with the audience. Then towards the end of the year he acted in another comedy film Bhagam Bhaag which was a success again.
In the year 2007, he gave some four hits without any flop. His first release was Namasti London, which was a huge success and earned him a Best Actor nomination at the Filmfare Awards. This was followed by films like Hey Baby and Bhul Bhulaiya, which were successful at the box office. This was followed by Welcome, which was hugely successful at the box office, achieving blockbuster status and at the same time it became his fifth consecutive hit film.
In 2008, his first film Tashan, which was 11 years later with Yash Raj Films, flopped. He then starred in the film Singh, which is Kinj which was again a huge success at the box office and broke the world record of Om Shanti Om‘s first week. He did an animated film Jumbo. That year he also appeared on the small screen, hosting a game show Fear Factor – Khatron Ke Khiladi.
Then in 2009 he starred in Warner Bros. – Rohan Sippy Production in the film Chandni Chowk to China, which was a flop. He then starred in the 8 x 10 picture, which was again a flop. This was followed by Kambakkht Ishq and Blue. Blue collected around Rs 42 crore at the box office. He then starred in De Dana Dan.
In the year 2010, he starred in the film Houseful which produced the second highest opening weekend collection of all time.
